Message From Father Jim on Our Purpose and Need

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

For 58 years, our beloved parish has been the spiritual and cultural center for many! We have seen our parish grow and mature in ways that through God’s Grace have allowed us to enjoy each other as a Church Family.

Our beautiful sanctuary has been a haven for all our spiritual needs for the past 44 years; our Liturgical life revolves around it. Our Church has provided us a sacred place where we have participated in OUR Divine Liturgies/Services, as well as OUR Weddings, Baptisms, and Funerals.

Just as we update/remodel our homes, our Church interior must receive the same love and attention. There is an urgent need to repair/restore our sanctuary. This project entails repair of the roof, new HVAC system, new ceiling, update lighting, new pews and carpeting.

RAISE THE ROOF is being established with the prayer to help, sustain, plan, preserve, and support our beautiful St. Demetrios Church not only for today, but for future generations. This can only be done with YOUR HELP!

What is the nature of the Raise the Roof?

Raise the Roof is a church restoration project with an external and an internal phase. The external phase includes installment of a new roof and replacement of the HVAC systems. The internal phase includes duct work, new lighting fixtures, painting, carpet replacement and pew replacement.

When will the work be done?

The external phase of the project will begin this fall after the festival. The internal phase of the project will begin the summer of 2018. The church will be unavailable for events such as weddings and baptisms the summer of 2018.

How much will the project cost?

The project is estimated to cost $717,000. The goal is to raise the entire cost through this capital campaign.

When do we need to have the funds raised by?

Pledges need to be turned in by October 1, 2017. First payment is due by December 31, 2017 and the second by April 1, 2018.

How will we raise the funds for this project?

We are engaging in a capital campaign to raise the funds. This will include reaching out to donors individually and larger fundraising events.

Why not use funds from stewardship and the festival?

Your stewardship contributions and funds from the festival pay for the annual expenses to operate the church.

Why not use funds from the endowment fund?

Though intended for restoration projects, the endowment fund provides us with a unique opportunity to ensure the long term financial wellbeing of our parish due to fund’s potential for growth. If we continue allowing the fund to grow, we may not be dependent on capital campaigns for future restoration projects. On the other hand, if we currently extract a significant amount from the endowment fund, we run the risk of not having the necessary assets to deal with future restoration projects while missing out on a great investment tool.

Who are we working with?

We are working with AODK, Inc, an architectural design firm in Lakewood specializing in new construction and renovation of churches. The firm was founded in 1999 by David Krebs.

Who is overseeing the project?

The home committee, aesthetics committee and parish council are overseeing the project.

How will I know the status of the project?

We will provide periodic updates on the capital campaign and restoration efforts.
